Art Chicago opens on Thursday evening, and it is without a doubt, one of my favorite events of the year. Last year, I gave birth to my son on the opening day of the show, but still made it there by the closing day with 5-day-old Teddy in tow. That's how much I love Art Chicago. We managed to see a good portion of the show and scooped up a fantastic painting too.
Art Chicago was founded as the American version of Art Basel in contemporary art show in 1980, and was the first show of its kind in America. It is an annual international fair of contemporary and modern art. Exhibitors include the world's leading emerging and established galleries. During the 1990s, it was widely considered to be the nation's most important 20th century art show, second only to Art Basel Switzerland in global importance. Similar shows have since popped up in other places like New York and Miami (I'm sure you've heard of a little show called Art Basel Miami, yes?). But Chicago is just as sexy as Miami and just as sophisticated as New York, so DON'T MISS THIS SHOW!
Art Chicago 2009 will include painting, photography, drawings, prints, sculpture, video
and special installations from cutting-edge artists and modern masters. Touring the show and soaking up all of the visual imagery is treat enough, but I suspect that the current economic climate will present some interesting buying opportunities as well.
Be sure to check out the NEXT show as well (which will be running simultaneously on a separate floor of the Merchandise Mart), for emerging artists and more affordable acquisitions.
I hope to see you at the Preview Party on Thursday night!
